En cette période, beaucoup d'anciens militaires ont une pensée pour leurs frères d'armes mobilisés en opérations extérieures dans des pays en guerre, souvent loin des leurs. Rencontre avec l'un d'eux
Pascal Durand, aujourd'hui docker au port de Calais, est un ancien engagé volontaire qui a participé à la première opération extérieure menée par l'armée française au Tchad, en 1978.
Ce Calaisien, né au Pont-du-Leu n'avait pas encore 18 ans lorsqu'il est arrivé sur le territoire tchadien en pleine guerre civile. Depuis la fin de la guerre d'Algérie en 1962, l'armée française n'était intervenue hors de France qu'avec beaucoup de discrétion et à la demande des dirigeants d'ex-colonies françaises. Mais en 1978 commence une nouvelle forme d'intervention extérieure, avec des unités d'engagés volontaires préfigurant l'armée actuelle. Ces fameuses OPEX, opérations extérieures sont toujours d'actualité.
Pourquoi vous êtes-vous engagé ?
Je me suis engagé volontairement en 1978. Je voulais voir du pays. Je venais de perdre ma mère et j'éprouvais le besoin d'être canalisé. J'ai donc pris la direction de la gendarmerie, rue Descartes, j'ai fait trois jours à Cambrai et un mois plus tard, je recevais une lettre m'indiquant d'aller à la gare de Dunkerque. Ni une, ni deux j'arrivais à Vannes dans le Morbihan. Après un passage obligé chez le coiffeur pour une coupe réglementaire des cheveux, j'intégrais le centre d'entraînement pour les classes. C'était fin février 1978, en plein hiver.
Les premiers militaires français sont arrivés au Tchad, en février 1978. Vous leur avez emboîté le pas ?
Oui. Après les classes, j'ai rejoint la 1re compagnie basée à Rennes. Nous étions en alerte. Des canons étaient disposés sur les trains.
L'opération Tacaud commençait. Nous avons embarqué dans un DC8 et nous avons appris à la dernière minute que nous partions pour le Tchad.
Votre réaction à ce moment précis ?
Heureux. Je voulais voir du pays, être utile. J'allais être servi. Nous avons débarqué à N'Djamena et il nous a fallu trois jours pour s'acclimater à cette chaleur de plomb. On allait manger du désert et de la piste. On arrivait sur une autre planète. Une planète dangereuse et pauvre surtout.
Quelle était votre mission au Tchad ?
Notre objectif était de parer la progression des rebelles tchadiens vers la capitale N'Djamena et d'épauler l'armée régulière tchadienne. Nous faisions des patrouilles pour montrer la présence française à la population locale. Je faisais parti du 3e RIMA (régiment d'infanterie de marine), notre devise était "Debout les morts "et nous avons participé à de violents combats. J'ai connu mon baptême du feu le 30 mai 1978 lors de la bataille de Djedda, à 45 km au nord d'Ati. Nous étions soutenus par une patrouille d'avions jaguars et faisions face à une importante bande de rebelles regroupés dans la ville. Pendant six heures, une pluie de coups de feu s'est abattue sur nous. Un des appareils a même été détruit par une rafale de mitrailleuse.
Mais au final, nous sommes venus à bout des rebelles lourdement armés d'AK47 et de missiles SAM7. J'ai fait deux séjours de six mois au Tchad et un autre en Centrafrique.
Aujourd'hui, vous conservez un bon souvenir de votre intervention au Tchad ?
Oui. Un excellent souvenir. Etre à 17 ans en OPEX, ça forge. C'est l'école de la vie. Mon meilleur souvenir reste l'esprit de camaraderie, cette formidable solidarité qui existait entre nous. On avait des missions que l'on remplissait en véritables professionnels. Nous étions tous d'horizons divers, de toutes les origines et de toutes les religions mais servions sous le même drapeau. C'est ce qui faisait notre force. Nous avions aussi une mascotte, Gertrude, une autruche qui nous volait nos savons. Mais il est vrai que parfois, c'était très dur. J'ai passé des nuits blanches à guetter l'ennemi. Moi, j'ai eu de la chance, je suis revenu en un seul morceau. D'autres n'en ont pas eu.
Quand vous regardez le journal télévisé, vous repensez à votre passage en Afrique ?
Oui, bien sûr. J'ai toujours une pensée pour les gars qui sont en OPEX, loin des leurs. Leurs missions semblent bien plus difficiles que les nôtres ne l'étaient. Nous savions qui était l'ennemi. Aujourd'hui, très souvent l'ennemi est invisible ou presque. Il peut surgir de partout. Le Tchad n'a pas changé. La population y est toujours aussi pauvre. A mon époque, les gamins venaient fouiller nos poubelles pour se nourrir et cela n'a pas changé.
